The Benefits of Choosing Our Raw Honey Over Commercially Processed Honey

As a beekeeper, I believe that honey is best enjoyed as nature intended. That’s why we take great care to produce raw honey with minimal processing, preserving the natural characteristics that the bees worked so hard to create.

Unlike our raw honey, many commercially processed honey products are heated and heavily filtered. This is often done to improve shelf appearance, slow crystallisation, and create a uniform product for large-scale distribution. While this produces a consistent-looking honey, it can also remove or reduce many of the natural components that give honey its unique character.

Our raw honey is extracted without heat and only lightly strained through mesh to remove larger pieces of wax. This means it retains trace amounts of pollen, propolis, enzymes, and other naturally occurring compounds found in the hive. These elements contribute to the flavour, aroma, and complexity of true raw honey.

Another important difference is traceability and origin. Our honey is produced locally in the Yatala area from bees foraging on seasonal native and introduced flora such as paperbarks, bottlebrush, wattles, herbs, and eucalyptus species. In contrast, some commercially available honey products may be blended from multiple sources and imported from different regions or countries to achieve a consistent supply and flavour profile year-round.

In some international supply chains, there have also been concerns raised about honey being blended or extended with sugar syrups such as corn syrup, rice syrup, or beet-derived syrups. While this is not representative of all commercial honey, it highlights the importance of transparency, traceability, and choosing trusted producers who prioritise purity and quality.

Commercially processed honey is often designed for consistency, but we prefer to celebrate natural variation. Every jar of our honey reflects the seasons, the flowers in bloom, and the environment our bees are working in at that moment in time.

Choosing our raw honey also means supporting responsible beekeeping practices. The health and welfare of our bees always come first. We carefully manage our hives, ensure the bees retain adequate honey stores for their own needs, and harvest only the surplus honey the colony can comfortably spare.

For us, raw honey is more than just a product. It is a reflection of healthy bees, local landscapes, and careful stewardship. By choosing raw honey, you are supporting both local ecosystems and sustainable beekeeping practices.
